“Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants California’s students to run, jump and squat their way to a new gymnasium for their schools.

As part of his effort to boost students’ physical fitness, the governor on Wednesday announced a fitness challenge. He wants to get 20,000 kindergarten through 12th-grade students active for 30 to 60 minutes a day at least three times a week.

As an incentive, the school with the highest percentage of participating students at the end of the four-week challenge will win a new fitness center. The next 11 will win $1,000 to buy fitness equipment.

A statewide review of physical fitness released in November found that nearly half of California’s ninth-grade students don’t have the stamina to briskly run one mile.

Fewer than a third of the nearly 1.4 million students who took the test in fifth, seventh and ninth grades met all the minimum benchmarks in areas such as percentage of body fat, abdominal strength and flexibility.

State law requires that elementary students receive 200 minutes of physical education every 10 school days and double that many for grades 7-12, but the state conducts few compliance checks.

Schwarzenegger has promoted increased physical activity for students since he was a member of former President Bush’s Council on Physical Fitness.

Two bills aimed at improving school nutrition will take effect this July.

One will require foods sold in school vending machines to meet high nutritional standards and regulate the number of calories from fat and sugar. The other limits drinks sold at schools to water, milk and some fruit and sport drinks that have limited sweeteners.

Schwarzenegger launched the student fitness challenge Wednesday at a Sacramento middle school.

Teachers and schools can register for the program online, where they also can keep track of their progress against other schools.”

Jessica Alba Fitness

On Her Diet

“Everyone in my family is heavily overweight. I wanted to be healthier, so I started cooking for myself when I was 12 years old. When I eat breakfast, I’ll have an egg-white omelet and fruit, or cottage cheese and a peach. For lunch, I’ll have a salad. Dinner is usually vegetables and chicken or fish. During the day I’ll have some dried fruit, or I’ll have a chocolate or strawberry frozen yogurt. I don’t really eat desserts or bread.”

On Her Fitness

“I try to work out every day for 45 minutes to an hour. I start out on the treadmills or elliptical machines for 10 to 15 minutes to get my heart rate up to 180 beats per minute. Then I do 50 lunges and crunches. Next I get back on the machine for another 10 minutes. Then I work on shoulders, biceps and triceps. I do that nonstop for four sets. When I work out, I have energy and feel good about myself.”

Anyone who regularly works out and owns an Ipod can understand and appreciate the combination.  Music while exercising is a distraction and motivation for me personally. It takes my mind off of how many more minutes or miles remain while pumping me up at the same time.  As if that technology wasn’t great enough, Ipod has teamed up with Nike for something new and even more helpful. Nike has made sneakers that correspond with your Ipod Nano. I know it sounds too good to be true, but these sneakers provide an accurate assessment of your workout. Your ipod records every step you take as your virtual personal trainer. If you don’t believe me, you can see for yourself @ Apple and Nike.
